A barking dog can be a loud headache for everyone
A barking dog makes a lot of noise. And most dogs seem to instinctually know when it is inappropriate to bark. And that is when they make the most noise. A barking dog will disrupt not only your concentration but also your neighbours. A loud dog can put strains on your relationships with your next-door neighbours.
There are a few things that an owner of a barking dog can do to help teach the dog silence. One of them is to constantly shout at them to be quiet. Although I have noticed that it only seems to add to the noise level, not lessen it. Most dogs won’t listen to a screaming neighbour any more than they would to their screaming owner. Another trick for him, is to bop him on the nose with a rolled up newspaper when he barks. That doesn’t always work either. Most dogs think of it as a new game and try to eat the newspaper.
There is one method that seems to work best on a barking dog. They have produced and marketed an electronic dog collar that sends a gentle shock to your dog when he barks. It doesn’t harm the dog. But it will teach him quickly that sometimes it just easier to be quiet.
